Liaquat Ali Khan’s Death Anniversary

A formal demand for declaring a public holiday on the death anniversary of Pakistan’s first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, has emerged as the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) submitted a resolution in the Sindh Assembly.

The resolution states that Liaquat Ali Khan was not only Pakistan’s first Prime Minister but also one of the closest and most trusted associates of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. To honor his remarkable services and sacrifices, the MQM has proposed that October 16th be observed as a public holiday across the province.

The resolution was submitted by MQM lawmakers Jamal Ahmed, Qurat-ul-Ain, Naseer Ahmed, and Faisal Rafiq. According to the movers, remembering national heroes and highlighting their contributions is essential for educating the younger generations about Pakistan’s history and the struggle for independence.

Liaquat Ali Khan is commemorated every year on October 16, the day he was assassinated in 1951 during a public gathering at Company Bagh in Rawalpindi. His tragic death marked a turning point in Pakistan’s early political trajectory and left a deep imprint on national history.

MQM maintains that the day carries immense national importance, and declaring it a holiday would allow people to reflect on the sacrifices made by the founding leaders. The resolution urges the Sindh government to officially notify a holiday on this date and ensure that ceremonies and educational events are held to pay tribute to the country’s first Prime Minister.
